3C: Sources of Information
This post is about the sources of information that I find most useful in my area of practice....
The internet, in particular Google, is the source of information I rely most heavily on. I use it to search for auditions, classes and for all the questions that baffle me in life. It is a very up-to-date source and can be accessed any time you have a laptop, tablet or phone on you (which let's face it is pretty much all the time). What I find most annoying about using the internet as a source of information is how easy it is to get distracted when looking something up or procrastinating until I run out of time but perhaps not everyone has a goldfish's attentions span. As mentioned in other blog posts always be mindful of confidentiality when using the internet and in particular social media where it is very easy to get carried away sharing personal details.
My circle of colleagues and friends is another important source for me. It is most satisfying to share information with actual human beings and often really motivating because you feel like you're 'in it together'. Also if you are open with your information you never know when someone will return the favour and when that happens I am always so grateful. You have to bear in mind that people are often inadvertently biased and sometimes just get things wrong and information can get meddled with Chinese whispers style...
Magazines such as The Dancing Times and Dance Europe are other means of gathering information that I find helpful. They are only published every month however so it is not as up-to-date as using the internet. It is also a secondary source of information and therefore can be summarised and more brief. When using this information for work or research, you would have to be aware of copyright restrictions and always quote or rewrite in your own words.
Subscription mailing lists such as Dancing Opportunities and The Stage are also good sources of information that require very little effort because it just appears daily in your inbox! It's free and acts as a reminder that you need to keep your eyes peeled however sometimes I find myself getting complacent and missing things that weren't advertised in these sources because I stopped actively looking.
These are my most obvious and most frequently used sources of information, feel free to comment with your thoughts...
